Dear Citadel Football Association:

First and foremost, I would like to thank the Citadel faithful that made the trip up to Lexington this weekend, specifically the 50 knobs that came to cheer us on. They were fantastic support, and it was great to see them celebrating the win on the field with the team after the game. This win means a lot to the fans, the school, and to our staff, but I am most excited for the team. It was great to see them celebrate the win at VMI and bringing the Silver Shako back to Charleston where it belongs. This team is starting to realize just how good they can be. They have also realized that they have let a couple games get away from them and that we must capitalize on the rest of the opportunities we are given. We signed up for 12 games, and we are going to get the best out of the players for the full 12 games.

We played boring football this weekend, which is what we are looking for, especially this upcoming weekend against Samford’s fast paced air raid attack. Samford is led by quarterback Quincey Crittendon, who had some early season struggles but has hit his stride recently and is playing well. They also have a talented running back, Damonta Witherspoon, along with two talented wide receivers, Brenden Jenkins and Jai Mason. They have some talent and experience in some areas where we have youth, namely the perimeter. We will have wrinkles this weekend and will have to mix up the coverages to confuse the quarterback and slow down his decision making. I think this weekend will be a great test of our maturation as a defense.

This weekend will be our Senior Day game. We have 24 young men that will be honored before the game. We are interested in building the person, not just the player, and I am proud of these young men and the direction that they are headed.

Sincerely,

Maurice T. Drayton
