“It started with a wall, went to a stadium, then to a fence and finished with a wind screen”

This project was initiated by CFA members: Jim Maxon, Jeff Weston, John Carlisle and Mike Groshon from Citadel Athletic Department. Labor was provided by Charleston County Detention Center in form of Community Service Program through Jim Maxon contacts with Charleston County.  Initial paint cost was $300 dollars from Lowe’s plus another $500 along the way in additional paint and supplies.  All walls got two coats of primer and one coat of Citadel Grey paint.  Total painting time was four days with nine persons painting.  The Citadel Physical Plant furnished a “high lift” and painted the two end walls of Stadium in two days.  All outside entrance doors were painted black.

Col. Dewey Yeatts, V.P. for Facilities & Engineering at The Citadel, approached CFA and asked if organization would be interested in painting the decking on East Stands.  The answer was “Yes, if school would furnish paint”.  Entire stands were pressured washed, decking painted Citadel Grey and all hand rails painted Navy Blue.

It was suggested by CFA that “wind screens” be installed at back of Stands to enhance appearance of Stadium and all fencing surrounding Stadium be painted black.  This was approved, and paid by The Citadel.  New signage, furnished by Athletic Department, was installed on outside entrances to stadium and on fences.

An overall estimate of all work done was in the neighborhood $250,00.00 if it had been contracted out to private companies.  The bid just to paint stadium decking was $107,000.00.  The entire project cost was less than $20,000.00.

This entire project was completed in just over three weeks.  It was a truly a team effort of The Citadel Football Association, The Citadel Facilities, Athletic Department, Administration, Aramark, and Charleston County Detention Center.  There are a number of individuals not named but contributed their time and expertise to make this project successful. It is truly something that all “The Citadel Family” can be proud of.
